We’re kind of kidding but it’s also not the most far-fetched thought. If you’re questioning ‘how?’ or ‘why?’ well, get this: Oreo built a Global Oreo Vault, in 2020, which resides only down the road from the Svalbard Global Seed Vault that was built in 2008. The vault is meant to serve as a last hope in the case that all plant life disappears. And, well, now we will also have Oreos in case an asteroid hits the earth.

Go to 78° 08′ 58.1″ N, 16° 01′ 59.7″ E and you will find the treasure of Oreo cookies.
The Global Oreo vault isn’t as massive as the Svalbard Global Seed Vault but it’s just as protective. The popular cookie brand announced, “As an added precaution, the Oreo packs are wrapped in mylar, which can withstand temperatures from -80 degrees to 300 degrees Fahrenheit and is impervious to chemical reactions, moisture, and air, keeping the cookies fresh and protected for years to come.”
The silly idea and even sillier advertising on YouTube were born in August 2022 after the news of a “very small” asteroid having a .41 percent chance of entering the Earth’s atmosphere, according to NASA.
Although the asteroid posed no threat given its small size, Oreo still wanted to go the extra mile to make sure their cookies and the recipe will be safe if a major world disaster occurs.

So, let’s just say that an asteroid does hit and all society has left are the Oreos locked away in the vault. Will cookies become the world’s next form of currency too?
Maybe we all need to put some Oreos into a personal vault to get ahead on saving for our kids’ and grandkids’ college tuition.
