Former Vice President Mike Pence stated that he would adhere to the law if compelled to testify in former President Donald Trump’s trial related to the 2020 election. In an interview with CNN’s Dana Bash on “State of the Union,” Pence made it clear that he has no immediate plans to testify, but he emphasized his commitment to legal obligations.
Pence asserted that Trump is entitled to a presumption of innocence and has the right to present his defense in court. He also highlighted the profound issues surrounding the case, particularly pertaining to the First Amendment and freedom of speech. Pence expressed confidence that Trump and his lawyer would address these matters in court.
Earlier this year, Pence was subpoenaed by the special counsel to testify before a federal grand jury, and after some legal wrangling, he testified in April. Trump, on the other hand, recently pleaded not guilty to four criminal charges, including conspiracy to defraud the United States, linked to the investigation into attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election.
When asked about the possibility of being a witness, Pence told CBS News that he would respond to the law’s call and truthfully testify if required.
During his CNN interview, Pence also contradicted Trump’s claims that he had a right to reject the election result while presiding over Congress’ Electoral College vote count. Pence firmly stated that he upheld his oath to the Constitution and reiterated his commitment to the nation over any individual.
The former vice president also shared his belief that anyone who prioritizes their interests above the Constitution should not hold the office of the President. In fact, Pence announced his candidacy for the presidency, citing his commitment to upholding the Constitution and the country’s values.
In response to Trump’s recent claims on Truth Social, Pence held firm in his stance, asserting that he had remained loyal to the Constitution throughout his tenure as vice president. The ongoing legal proceedings continue to draw attention as the trial date is set for the future.
