Things are heating up in the world of Donald Trump.

This week, Fox News aired previously unaired footage of the attempted insurrection on January 6, 2021, at the US Capitol.

The footage was given to Fox host Tucker Carlson by new House Speaker Kevin McCarthy – whose motives are now under intense scrutiny.

Carlson spun a web of dishonest perspective, choosing footage that only showed protestors being peaceful and calm, and spun a false narrative for his viewers.

Carlson heavily skewed and edited footage to show a story fitting his agenda, even as Fox faces accusations of election misconduct over their willfully misleading coverage of the 2020 election in the weeks that followed.

Trump sees the footage – doctored and pieced together intentionally – as exoneration for his culpability over the actions of his followers on January 6.

But even as he continues to claim that his supporters are peaceful and he does not condone violence, he turns to social media to whip up more violence – and he did it again this week.

Donald Trump Summons More Violence

Donald Trump violence

In recent months, Trump’s rhetoric on Truth Social has been dark and fevered.

He keeps signal boosting violent concepts and promising things like “retribution” and that his fed-up followers are going to “stop” another “election steal.”

We know now of course that the 2020 election was not stolen; Trump lost it fair and square. Investigation after investigation has failed to turn up any significant election fraud, and it’s beginning to look conclusively as though Trump knew the truth.

But he spun a narrative to whip his followers into a furious frenzy, which culminated in the attack on the Capitol.

Now, he’s doing it again.

But this time, he can’t say he did not realize what would happen or try to wash his hands clean – he’s making himself more responsible for what comes next with every violent signal boost and promise of revenge.

After Carlson’s misleading footage aired on Fox, Trump crowed on Truth that he was exonerated, and his followers should be set free because clearly they did nothing wrong.

Trump posted, “LET THE JANUARY 6 PRISONERS GO. THEY WERE CONVICTED, OR ARE AWAITING TRIAL, BASED ON A GIANT LIE, A RADICAL LEFT CON JOB. THANK YOU TO TUCKER CARLSON AND SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE KEVIN McCARTHY FOR WHAT YOU BOTH HAVE DONE. NEW VIDEO FOOTAGE IS IRREFUTABLE!!!”

He even paused to take a swing at Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, and then at President Joe Biden.

Trump wrote, “FLORIDA WAS DOING GREAT FOR MANY YEARS, LONG BEFORE RON DESANCTUS GOT THERE. THE SUNSHINE AND OCEAN ARE WONDERFUL THINGS TO HAVE!”

He later added, “Everything is exposed on Hunter Biden’s Laptop from Hell, including massive crime by Joe and Hunter — But nothing happens, they just keep coming after me. The good news is that AMERICA WON’T TAKE IT ANY LONGER!”

Donald Trump’s Messaging Problem

The problem with Trump continuing to whip his followers into a frenzy is that he keeps trying to convince people that he would never do such a thing.

The Department of Justice is looking more and more likely to hand down an indictment over his involvement in January 6, and his only defense would be “it’s not my fault because I didn’t tell them to do this.”

But the investigators can see his social media, and observe his pattern of inciting violence. So it’s a tough sell as a defense.

As the 2024 election nears and the country has another choice to make, they’re faced with the harsh reality that Trump supporters will likely erupt into violence again if their MAGA leader does not win in 2024.

Voters are getting weary of Trump’s non-stop controversies and penchant for disrupting the country’s safety, but it’s happening again like a repeat of a bad dream.

Trump’s rhetoric shows that he hasn’t had any personal growth since January 6 and is happy to throw his followers under the bus (or in prison) to stay in power – so the likelihood of a January 6 version 2.0 increases by the month.
